ATZ - The first week after the outbreak

Figures: 28mm Wiz Kids, EM-4, and various manufacturers Rules - ATZ (2009 version) The police have sent 2 rescue squads to search and retrieve survivors. As the police approach they aren't sure what they will find. Several zombies walk aimlessly around the town. Each squad will go to as many buildings as possible to search for survivors and scrounge for supplies. The road ahead is daunting A card (Risk and Rewards deck) would be flipped when the building was entered to determine who or what was encounteredThe options are Survivors, Zombies or nothing.
The mission is to clear as many buildings as possible to find survivors and supplies and exit off of the opposite edge.
Since shooting can attract zombies the police try to do melee, a very bad decision. They scored no successes and were quickly overrun. The 3 surviving team members leave the fallen and run into a factory. This is not a good start for the first team. From now on its all firepower.
As they enter the building they find no one but uncover a crossbow.
The second team lost no one and was able to rescue 3 survivors
The zombies were able to take out 2 members in the second turn were feasting for 4 turns. This enabled both teams to fast move and create distance.
A second zombie mob emerged near city hall. Both teams were fast moving until the end. Then tactical movement was used to prevent any surprises from random directions.
The second team (Bravo) rescued more people and won the game. These teams will be used again, including new members, to continue their escape.

ATZ - Early Days part 2

The police had their hands full. The small riot turned into a fight for survival as the dead swarmed the steps of City Hall. The mayor dd not get very far. The zombies activated before he did, and he was overwhelmed. The police fled when they failed their "See the Feast " roll. No amount of money or influence could save him.

The gang rescued their member and proceeded to find the keys to the tractor and tried to start the rig but failed twice. The noise attracted more zombies who were arriving every turn. They began to swarm the tractor. The gang climbed to the top just narrowly avoiding the grisly death. With the noise from 2 shot guns (one stolen from the police car) the horde grew quickly.

In other parts of town the police lines failed to hold. Low ammo combined with fear yields poor results for the law. The new lines were reformed in the center of town. The survivors fled to any building they could get into as doorways were blocked with whatever the survivors could find. The police finally broke and ran to the church to rethink their next move. There is no doubt some of the survivors were injured and unknowingly carried the infection into the safe zones.

The gang started the tractor and plowed through a police car blocking the road. The sedan exploded as the full tanker accelerated through the vehicle. The zombies passed the burning wreck in a futile pursuit. The gangers accomplished their mission and won't be effected by the sky high gas prices, but suddenly money was no longer a concern.

I know the rules are for a 2 hour game, bit ours took 4 because of all the figures and factions to be moved, as well as a ton of charts to keep track of . Can't wait to try the new rules set.

ATZ Campaign The Early Days

Rules: All Things Zombie (The Old School ATZ)

Scale 28mm

Police: Rep 4

Peaceful Protesters: Rep 3

Gang: Rep 5 Leader and Rep 4 Thugs

News Team: Rep 3 - Bad Optics Special rule - Police and protesters cannot use violence while being filmed. Anyone in the camera view behind the reporter uses non-lethal melee and will push the losing figure 3 inches backward. When activated the team moves random directions.

Inflation was running high, there was a gas and food shortage, and we were on the edge of another pandemic, the ANSD virus. People were not about to stay locked up for another virus outbreak, even with rumors of strange side effects. A crowd marched to City Hall demanding answers and to yell at someone. The police did the best they could to lock down the town, but their funding was stripped 6 months ago. Any store that was lucky enough to have merchandise was quickly served a cease and desist and was threatened to have their business license revoked (that's why they are issued to begin with, to ensure compliance). Only the big chain retailers were allowed to stay open because of the "science" of the CDC.

The mayor was trying to leave the latest City Council meeting under heavy police escort, but the protesters did not care. They approached the limo and were mostly peaceful. There were a few arrests to keep the more energetic youths in check. The mayor is not allowed to move toward the car until the police secure the perimeter. The police have riot gear and form a defensive perimeter at the entrance of the building getting ready to push through. The police chief gave instructions for no heavy-handed tactics while on camera.

News reports stated there one person tied to a local gang tried to steal a fuel truck, no doubt to sell on the black market. The Gang's objective is to rescue the arrested gang member and steal the gas truck.

Damn punks causing trouble.

The Police move in, there mission is to clear 3 inches around the limo so the mayor can be extracted. The mounted patrol moves forward with the riot police press with shields up. The mob and the police restrain themselves because of the reporter nearby. The house rule is that as long as the camera is pointed toward the group neither side can use violence. Melee attacks only result in pushing the loser back. But when the camera moves away, the real melee starts.

The police struggle to clear a path as they get outnumbered in melee.

The News team moves randomly when activated. They hold up factions from completing their objectives. They want to make sure they get their story, even if they have to make something up.

Each turn Zombies begin to appear at random entry points. Unfortunately for the Mayor and his entourage of "Yes Men", waves of undead appear behind City Hall and attack.  Since this is early in the outbreak no one knows what a Zombie is and their movement is ignored, they are too slow to be considered a threat. Some people are attacked from behind and are at a severe disadvantage in melee.  The reporter is of course oblivious to the danger as she tries to create another news story by agitating the opposing parties. Off camera the violence erupts, even a mounted patrol officer is pulled off his horse by peaceful protesters and he is out of the fight along with a trampled protester.

When the camera crew turned away the mob and police used lethal force and set upon each other. The resulting casualties rise up to feed on the living. When the police and protesters saw the Zombie Feast they all scattered to get away not sure what is happening. A large segment fled the scene including the mayor's body guard. The mayor and his entourage ducked back next to City Hall. The zombies continued forward. The mayor is blaming the opposing political party for the unrest and think its a planned attack.

As the first victim is set upon people shriek and take cover behind the limo.

Protesters and police flee the area, others paralyzed with fear retire and hunker down in disbelief of watching their comrades being torn apart. The news team fled as well to the safety of their van. They tried to film the grisly scene as people ran by screaming at the horror they witnessed.

The zombies clear the protesters quickly

The entourage runs away to leave the wheelchair bound mayor to fend for himself....

On the other side of town the gang uses the protest to mask their movement to recover their friend and steal the truck. They shoot two of the cops who promptly rise up and attack the living. The shots also attract more zombies. The gang splits in to 2 groups but as they get to the truck of gas another mob of zombies advance.

The effects of ANSD Day 1

News Release:

Monday February 20, 2012 the FDA and CDC have issued a joint statement.

Threat Notice
ANSD threat in Delaware

This information is current as of today, February 20, 2012 at 18:20 EST

ataxic neurodegenerative satiety deficiency syndrome or ANSD

What Is the Current Situation?

Beef and beef products containing a batch identification number A73216660112 are suspected to be tainted and must be recalled. The suspension of all beef sales is mandatory. All citizens are required to Contact the CDC immediately if they suspect they possess contaminated beef. Participation is mandatory without exception. Most of the contaminated beef has been accounted for but several shipments have not been accounted for and need to be located and disposed. Facilities handling the contaminated beef are being sanitized.

What Is ANSD?

ANSD - The virus has several brain-destroying components, one of which is a "prion," meaning a protein like the one that causes mad cow disease. Prions twist when they are in an acidic environment and become dangerous, says Dr Schlozman. How our own environment has changed to make prions infectious -- getting from the soil to the cows in mad cow disease, for instance -- is still a mystery.

How Can Consumers Protect Themselves?

The U.S. Department of Health, Food and Drug Administration, and Center for Disease Control has maintained a recall for Delaware residents urging citizens to avoid all beef byproducts and patties purchased in January 2012 with the batch number A73216660112. Any consumer found to be in possession of contaminated beef must avoid contact with the product. It is recommended that citizens wash their hands after handling raw beef.

The afternoon of Monday February 20, 2012 Wilmington, Delaware.....

Pimp Leon is watching from across the street. in a school parking lot. "Damn news team, now the customers will be scared away". He thinks for a time and decides to stay quiet, he doesn't want any unnecessary attention. He knows that if he doesn't make a scene the team will be on their way that much faster.

The employees at Mrs. Lovett's meat pie stand are open but sales are unusually low.  They haven't been made aware of the notice for the recalled beef and start dishing out pastries filled with beef byproducts. Belinda Lovett is preparing the meat at notices a foul smell wafting up through the air. She has no interest in disposing of any bad beef and decides to add extra spices to cover up any off taste. She can't afford to throw out any meat or she would take an even higher financial loss.

A local construction worker , a regular customer, stops and orders the usual. "How's it going guys? I hope business is better than mine, this economy sucks". He orders two meat pies and eats them quickly. "I gotta go back and finish the shift and I can't be late, my foreman is a complete.. uh, I don't fell so...a complete assho..." His eyes roll back and he falls to the ground.

One of the working girls and Lori the sound engineer run to assist the poor guy . "I think he's choking ..wow he's turning green, i though they turned blue....eeewwww gross!" The worker stops moving and lies motionless.
 Turn 1
Zombie Initiative: 3
People: 6

The corpse attacks with 3D6 and misses both women rolling a 4, 5, and 5. At this point no reaction tests are taken  as people have no idea about what's going on. Good samaritans are stepping up to help a person in distress.

As the two women try to figure out how to help the poor soul reporter Angela Smith steps back, her dress is too expensive to get dirty but she yells at her camera man, "Jimmy, hurry up and get the shot you idiot, get over there and get the shot!" Several minutes go by until the workers eyes open revealing a colorless pale stare. Everyone is relieved, they were fearing the worst for the construction worker.  and he grabs for the prostitute and then Lori. The hooker gets mad and says not until you pay first you creep!" Lori is a little shaken and jumps back and the worker rises slowly.
 Turn 2
Zombie: 4
People: 3

The attacker stands and faces the stunned cook and cashier. They can not retreat or get out of the way of what is about to happen. The zed successfully charges as it wins the initiative and gains the surprise which equates to more dice for a melee resolution.

The worker groans and hisses with rage and the bystanders back up. The cooks in the food stand look with eyes wide open and are not sure what going on. The cashier is Ricardo  and he asks, "Hey buddy are you OK? you don't look so good". The workers pale gaze fixates on the crew behind the counter.
The zombie charges and scores 1 hit knocking Ricardo OOF. The other 2 employees are stunned for the turn due to the ferocity of the attack.

The crawling corpse grabs Ricardo and bites his arm and  then rips open his face. Ricardo falls screaming with blood spurting about. The rest of the employees don't know what to do. Should they run or render aid? The news team offers no assistance as Angela screams, "Keep filming...keep on them!"
 Turn 3
Zombie 3
People 1
The zombie is not satisfied with only attacking the cashier and turns on the short order cook. The melee result is not even close as the zombie scores 2 hits on the hapless victim. Mrs. Lovett keeps her wits about her but will run out of the area rather than try to fight off the zombie.

The cook is cornered and is also mauled and being torn to pieces. Mrs. Lovett screams and tries to escape.
The news crew advances a few inches to get a shot of an attack in progress since they are out of view of the carnage taking place. No reaction tables have been rolled yet.

Mrs. Lovett is able to escape and uncharacteristically jumps across the counter. The news crew moves up for a shot of the attack. If they can make it out alive this will be great footage. The cook and cashier's lifeless bodies stir and the news team tries to comprehend the chain of events unfolding before them....
